Community Centers:
Closed Until Further Notice
The following four centers offer after school programming free of charge to East Chicago residents ages 5-18 years of age. Registration is required. You can register at any of the centers. Community center hours are 3:00 pm-6:30 pm Monday - Friday (excludes holidays and city events)
Bessie Owens community center located at 4001 Alexander 219-391-8478

Unity Center and Heritage Hall
Unity and Heritage community center were both built in 2018. They are brand new facilities equipped with indoor basketball courts, indoor walking trail, rock climbing, and a fitness room. Both of these facilities welcome residents and non-residents. There is a small membership fee associates. Membership fees are due annually.

Unity Center is located at 3623 Guthrie Street 219-397-2392
Hours are Tuesday - Friday 10:00 am to 5:30 pm and Saturday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm
Ages 5 and up are welcome (children under 12 years of age must be accompany by an adult)
No street shoes, heels, or spike shoes are allowed in gym
Membership fees include access to facility and availability to participate in various programs that are offered throughout the year for example: sewing, art, sports clinics, yoga, and zumba just to name a few.
