MAYOR PABEY ANNOUNCES OPENING OF MACARTHUR GOLF COURSE
Golf Course Improvements Part of the Mayor’s Vision for a NEW East Chicago Community

(East Chicago, IN) – Continuing the City’s investment in improving public and open space in East Chicago, Mayor George Pabey announced today a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly revamped 9-hole MacArthur Golf Course (146th and Indianapolis Blvd.) to be held Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 10:00 AM.

“Our investment in the golf course is as important to our city’s future as are our investments in housing and commercial development,” says Mayor George Pabey. “It is in the parks that our children play and our families play and our residents gather for celebrations and more. Having the opportunity for our community to experience and participate the sport of golf is wonderful.”

For the past two years, the City has been rebuilding its parks, providing more appropriate and improved amenities and activities for its residents. In addition to the work at Nunez and Callahan parks, MacArthur and Tod Parks have received a $2 million overhaul in the last year, including the addition of the new nine-hole golf course, batting cages, mini-golf, and a soccer field..

“We are building a dynamic and strong city on all fronts – this is a very momentous time in the history of East Chicago,” continued Mayor Pabey.

The park redevelopment projects are part of Mayor Pabey’s larger vision for “A New East Chicago” a strategy of comprehensive community development involving new housing in the North Harbor area, citywide streetscapes, infrastructure and park improvements, and the creation of a public lakefront connection between East Chicago and Gary.
