EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (Oct. 9, 2008) Mayor George Pabey and the City of East Chicago, in collaboration with the School City, welcome Dr. James P. Comer, Child Psychiatrist at the Yale University School of Medicine's Child Study Center, Founder of the Comer School Development Program and East Chicago native, back to the City of East Chicago to discuss the revitalization of education throughout East Chicago an area that Mayor Pabey is aggressively working to redefine in his community, along with neighborhoods and economic development.
On Friday, Oct. 10, Dr. Comer will present to area legislators his School Development Program, which promotes the collaboration of parents, educators and community to improve social, emotional and academic outcomes for children that helps them achieve greater school success. Dr. Comer, city and state officials, and Chancellors of major state and regional universities will also be in attendance throughout the weekend in support of the Comer School Development Program. Attendees will also discuss the possibility of East Chicago being selected as Indiana's pilot school corporation for the program.
Public education workshops, as part of the School City's Parent University, will be held from 8 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Central High School, 2100 W. Columbus Drive, for parents, community members and students.
