Press Release
EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (Nov. 18, 2008) – Mayor George Pabey is on a mission to bring Main Street back to the residents of East Chicago. And he recognizes that it's going to take total community revitalization, and the rebuilding of neighborhoods, schools and business throughout his city.
That's why Mayor Pabey has implemented an aggressive plan to turn East Chicago back around. His focus is on the future, and he is making every effort within his abilities to make a better East Chicago a reality – actively promoting his "bold vision for a bright future."
Mayor George Pabey and the City of East Chicago, in conjunction with The Community Builders, Inc. and Hispanic Housing Development Corporation, will hold a Revitalization Kick-off Press Conference at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov.
19, at the corner of Main & Broadway in East Chicago. During the press conference, Mayor Pabey will update attendees on the tremendous progress and successes to date of his North Harbor Revitalization Initiative.
Mayor Pabey and TCB will unveil the identity of the first modern urban townhomes that are being built at this site. Mayor Pabey will make an announcement regarding public safety strategy and update attendees on enforcement initiatives he is putting in place to improve the quality of life for this community and throughout East Chicago.
The Revitalization Kick-off Press Conference will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the corner of Main & Broadway. In case of inclement weather, please go to the Roberto Clemente Community Center, 3616 Elm St., East Chicago. Complete press kits will be provided and will include downloadable digital images.
The North Harbor Revitalization Initiative is not just on paper – infrastructure has been put in place and improvements have been made. Mayor Pabey is overseeing more than $2.5 million in improvements to Nunez and Callahan Parks. More than $5 million has gone into streetscape (sidewalks, lamps, benches, landscape, etc.) and sewer system improvements. And East Chicago residents will reap the benefits of renovations to the nearby Carnegie Library into the Carnegie Performing Arts Center for years to come.
Mayor Pabey and the City of East Chicago are working with the Regional Development Authority so that in the long-term the North Harbor Revitalization area connects with a Marquette Plan project at Lake Michigan, bringing with it economic growth and a natural amenity.
Mayor Pabey has issued a new commercial zoning classification within the North Harbor region that holds businesses to new design standards. This zoning enforcement will ensure new business along Main & Broadway share a look that is representative of this entire, new mixed-use community. And Mayor Pabey is serious about these façade improvements – he has developed a Grand Task Force to enforce the new guidelines.
