SUMMER CAMP AND REGISTRATION (TBA)

STARS (Students Targeted at Reaching Success) summer day camp is offered at all neighborhood community centers. .

Our program goal is to help our youth build strong character by experiencing a variety of programs, and field trips, children all deserve a safe place to develop their personalities thru play, team sports, special events, all the while building life long friendships “Stars Summer Camp” is just the place for that.

East Chicago Parks and Recreation will kick off the registration for “STARS Summer Camp” programs April 28th thru May 30th at the Recreation office between the hours of 9am to 3pm Monday thru Friday.

Requirements of registration children must be East Chicago Residents, Parents are required to bring Indiana ID—proof of residents by Providing school records or current bill—and child's birth certificate.

RESPONSIBILITIES /East Chicago Parks & Recreation are NOT responsible for any personal belongings Children are urged NOT to bring valuables of any kind. Cell Phones, electronic games, radios, and computers, Cell phones are to be only used in emergency situations or for pick up only).

MEDICAL INSURANCE / Individual medical insurance is NOT provided by the City of East Chicago Park & Recreation Dept. Individuals are responsible for their own medical cost arising from injuries while participating in Recreation activities.

DRESS CODE POLICY / Garments that have pictures and/or writing that are vulgar suggestive, indecent or otherwise offensive or that allude to drugs, alcohol or gang involvement are not allowed. Shirts and shoes must be worn in building, children must wear tennis shoes in gym area, no open toe shoes or dress shoes allowed in gym. No hats, or bandanas, are allowed in gym.

Pool Passes - East Chicago Parks and Recreation has three public pool sites, one the size of an Olympic size pool and two standing water slide pools. Our pools are equipped with certified Lifeguards for the safety of the residents. FEES REQUIRED
- (Residents only) $10.00 per person for seasonal pass
- $5.00 per day for Non– Residents or $25.00 for seasonal pass
- Lost Pass fee $5.00 per card

Park permit special;
Wrist Bands will be sold in increments of 25 only, in the amount of $25.00 per day.

Hall RentalsEast Chicago Parks & Recreations has two rental options for your connivance:
* Riley Park Hall @ 1005 East Chicago Ave.
* Heritage Hall @ 4506 Tod Ave.

Deposits are required / 6 hour minimum for parties / Set up and Clean up time included with in the 6 hour agreements.

Health and Fitness / Youth Recreation & Sports


“Climbing the Fitness Ladder: Healthy Bodies minds & Attitudes “

Star’s summer camp is a structured 8 week recreational health and fitness program for youth, Camp offers East Chicago children, 5-18 years of age a positive alternative to risky behaviors, and negative influences during the summer months. These activities provide a basic foundation for developing skills, a full day of activities from 9am to 5pm that allow them to:

  1. Build self esteem helping them feel better about themselves
  2. Learning how to make better choices
  3. Begin to take steps towards an active life styles
  4. Build health relationship with adults and their piers
  5. Steering them away from TV, Cell phones, video games

Therefore lowering the risk of;

  1. Children unsupervised during the summer months
  2. Children experiencing no physical or learning activities during the summer months
  3. Unhealthy youth ,which can lead to depression / premature death


Field Trips for the summer

1. Lincoln Park Zoo / July 9th / 9am to 4pm
2. Lets Get up & Move /Kids Get Fit Challenge / July 30th / 10am to 3pm
(Transportation will be provided)
3. Carnival Celebration July 2
nd / 11am to 4pm (Tod Park)
3. Weekly pool visits / every Friday all centers 1pm to 4pm / except 4
th of July
4. Bowling Trips / Every Monday from 1pm to 3pm cost per child $3.00 cost includes two games & shoes
5. Deep River ages 12 & up July 23rd (80) 2 Buses 10am to 4pm ($17.00 ea)
5. The Youth and The Law (Judge Sonia Morris Program) July 8
th - 15th - 22nd & 29th / 9:30 to 12noon
6. All sports final Completion Day / Tod Park July 28
th /10am to 4pm (transportation will be provided)

Lets Get up & Move /Kids Get Fit Challenge

Parks & Recreation is taking children’s health and fitness to a new level this summer. We have planned many physical activities to keep the children engaged this summer and the “Lets Get Up and Move” kids challenge is just one of the programs to keep children on the move to a better will being . Each day the children will begin their day with a sprint around the gym followed with an activity especially designed to keep kids moving while having fun each day the activity will change. It will be very important for children to master these activities, because they will compete against other center at the challenge in the Park on July 30th from 10am to 3pm. There children will compete and win awards and trophy! Just a day filled with many activities and games, fun for all ages. (8week program June 9th – August 1st)

Recreation will also include fitness in just about every aspect of the program offering daily activities such as;

In house Basket Ball, Dodge Ball, Twirl Jump, Jump roping / Chinese jump rope , Scoop Ball , catch, Frisbee discs , Indoor bowling, Indoor hockey, Playing pool, Fuss ball table, Table games
Children will have many opportunities this summer without them even knowing to become physically active by, play daily, team sports and recreational games, all geared to improve the, Mind, Body and Attitudes, Games Good for the Heart! (8 week program June 9th – August 1st)

Creative Expressions
“Renew their minds through Art”

Recreation always find new thing to do with our children throughout the summer, and Creative Expressions will renew their Minds through art. Three times a week children will be allowed to expressing colors of their minds with a Pencil, Paint Brush, Crayons and more. Children will create several art expressions through (paint, murals, molding face sculptures, building, and geometric design). (8 week program June 9th – August 1st)

Sports Programs

Volleyball

Children from the community centers will have a great time learning the fundamentals of the sport Volleyball this summer. Beginning the first week of camp centers will build their teams for volleyball, each week children will practice at their centers twice a week for an hour and compete in practice games every Monday against other centers. Children will be transported Tod Park from their community centers from 10am to 12pm. Ages 10 and up - (8week program June 9th – August 1st)


Softball

Softball has always been a favorite of STARS Summer camp and this year we will make it available for all centers to have the equipment to practice at their own centers as well as transportation to Tod Park for practice game days every Tuesday from 1pm to 4pm, concluding all sport competition day. Ages 10 and up - (8 week program June 9th – August 1st)

Basketball League

This camp will consist of three age groups (5-7 -8-11 & 12- and up) for a total of 15 children per age group for a total of 45 children. Basketball is a physical fitness it is also challenges strategies and builds great sportsmanship. Children will learn the rules and fundamentals of basketball. Practice will be held twice a week for two hours at their local community centers, and practice game days will be every Thursday beginning June 19th at Tod Park from 10am to 3pm.

All sport completion Day (July 28th) Winners will be recognized victorious at closing ceremonies with trophies awards and ribbons


4 Quarters 4 Life Camp

A free three day camp inspired to introduce Football and Cheering to children of East Chicago Camp dates; June 18
th – 19th – 20th from 8am to 12pm at Tod Park. More information as it becomes available.


The First Tee Golf program

At The First Tee, they believe young people of all ages and backgrounds deserve an opportunity to learn the game of golf and experience the inherent values associated. The Program reinforces life and leadership skills, builds character and self-esteem and promotes healthy choices in children and teens. The First Tee promotes the nine core values ethics; Fee of $30.00 per child required

Program will take place at MacArthur Golf Course classes will beginning for ages:
  • 5-11 yrs of age on June 10th – 17th & 24th at 11:30am to 12:30 pm
  • 12 - 17 yrs of age on June 10th 17th & 24th at 1pm to 2pm
Only those children registered in Star’s Summer Camp will be transported to McArthur golf course from centers only.

Splash In to Water Programs

Family Fun Nights

Parks and Recreation always allowing time for families to create family quality time together therefore are strengthening the bond of a family’s relationship. The pools do just that it a great place to let your stress melt away, recreation will offer pool games and music for these family fun night events which will be held at all three pool sites; (6pm to 9pm) If weather doesn’t permit we will reschedule for another day.


Learn to swim classes

Youth ages 5-12 can learn the basic techniques plus valuable emergency skills. This summer we also offer classes for advanced swimmers. Requirements/ children must be at least 4 feet in height for both classes. (6 week class June 17th – July 31st allowing for rain days)

Tuesdays & Thursdays 9am to 9:45am

  • Sea HorseMiddle advanced class / Ages 5yrs to 9yrs old - Tuesdays & Thursdays 10am to 10:45am

  • Guppy —Beginner Class / Ages 5yrs— 9yrs old - Tuesdays & Thursdays 11am to 11:45am

All classes will be held at Goodman Pool

Closing Ceremonies

With the Closing Ceremonies marks the end another summer camp and the beginning of a new school year, on this day we take the time to recognize the children’s accomplishments, throughout the summer with sports awards they’ve earned, certificates, and helpful school supplies. Children take such pride in this day when parents come to cheer them on for being awarded; children will also perform with their piers for the very last time as the on lookers cheer their community centers. (Park August 1st 11am to 3pm)


All Aboard the
“Senior Navy Pier Boat Trip”

Mayor Anthony Copeland’s 9th Annual Senior Boat Ride; held on August day TBA, a $45.00 fee, seniors will be picked up by charter buses from Parking Lot across from City Hall at 9:30am returning at 4:30pm. Seniors will have time before boarding the ship to do their shopping along the board wall before boarding the ship for an afternoon of enjoyment with Buffet Lunch and Entertainment. (Residents 55 yrs old & up only / fees to be paid by money order / first come first serve)


5K Run / Walk

5th annual 5K Run / Walk - Hosted at Block Jr. High School. All proceeds will be donated to a charitable organization on behalf of the runners/ walkers. (DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED)


Night Out Against Crime

“Night Out Against Crime” (Hosted by the children of recreation) Providing Awareness’ to the residents on Anti Gang, Drug, and Alcohol, spreading the peace instead of violence throughout the city. (DATE AND TIME TO BE ANNOUNCED.)


Shipshewana trip
Wednesday June 18th / Come join us on the biggest shopping trip this summer our annual Shipshewana trip has become a tradition every year for our residents come and join us this year to find out what all the rave is!!! $15.00 Residents / $20.00 Non- residents (paid only in money order form)


Taste of East Chicago

Taste of East Chicago every year has proven itself to be a weekend of enjoyment; Parks and Recreations strive to reach new heights with our celebration, in the food, culture and entertainment. No other citywide event brings a larger crowd than THE TASTE OF EAST CHICAGO. The aromas of ethnic cuisine and all – American delights tantalizing their appetites. The Sounds of sweet music of all types on these hot summer nights, bringing together communities and outside visitors, “Taste of East Chicago” will be held at Veterans Park on August 15th – 16th – and 17th.
