East Chicago was recently selected as one of 21 Indiana communities to benefit from funding from the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program, awarded $1.9 million toward redevelopment in the North Harbor. This blighted area has been undergoing aggressive transformation under the administration of Mayor George Pabey and his North Harbor Revitalization Initiative, and in conjunction with The Community Builders, Inc. and Hispanic Housing Development Corporation that are developing high-quality residential and commercial opportunities in the North Harbor.
The grant award ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. (CST) at the intersection of Main & Broadway (3625 Main Street), which is central to Mayor Pabeys North Harbor Revitalization Initiative. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will take place inside the nearby Roberto Clemente Community Center.
The grant funds will enable Mayor Pabey and the City to further demonstrate progress in the North Harbor, where modern urban townhomes developed by TCB and HHDC will welcome first tenants this summer.
This grant award reasserts this administrations commitment to giving East Chicago back to its residents, says Mayor Pabey. I am proud of what weve done so far, and gracious to be selected for this award. But like I always say, the best is yet to come!
