The largest portion of the Solid Waste Division's resources are dedicated to refuse collection.

The Division has been able to increase on-time pick up by using new, more efficient trash cans and by increasing the worker productivity.

The amount of tonnage collected provides an important measurement of the amount of work done by the Division's employees.

In 1999, the City of East Chicago made collecting, transporting and disposing of wastes much easier by purchasing new 96 gallon Toter cart containers with cart lid. This new system, allows the Division's employees to take on their daily job assignments faster, safer and better!

This new 96 gallon Toter cart container is 1.23" (3.175 cm) in external diameter. The handle is an integrally molded part of the cart body and is 100% part of the cart body, allowing the cart to be used without lid if necessary. It has a one piece handle which makes it comfortable to grab. The top rim has a molded flange for extra rigidity and close lid fit. The cart container is on sunburst wheels with knobby treads that are 10" x 1.75" (nominal) and are retained with galvanized steel drive on palnuts.
