In 2003, the City of East Chicago implemented a program of occupational safety education and training.
The duties of this department shall include, but not be limited to the development of
a citywide safety and health education and training program for all city employees. The development of this initiative will serve to acquaint employers, supervisors, employees, and union leaders with the most modern and effective techniques of accident investigation and prevention.
Whenever the departmental director has the belief that imminent danger exists in any workplace site in the city in which the a condition can reasonably be expected to cause death or serious physical harm, the director shall immediately call cease to that work being performed until the dangers are removed.
To insure the availability of accurate, timely statistical data concerning occupational health and safety, all city departments shall submit monthly reports to this department (on a form and in a manner prescribed by the director) of all disabling work-related injuries and accidents.
The focus of this initiative is aimed at fulfilling obligations of the agreement between the City of East Chicago, Indiana and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, AFL-CIO, Local #142. However, all other city departments shall comply with the occupational safety and health standards provided by this particular department.
