City of East Chicago Summer Youth Employment
The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) provides the City of East Chicago youth 16 years and older with summer employment and educational opportunities. Participants will work in a variety of entry – level jobs.
EMPLOYMENT CRITERIA
1. Applicants must be an East Chicago resident or possess a technical knowledge or required skill if an East Chicago Resident does not meet job requirements.
2. Applicants must be 16 years old at time of application period or older.
3. Applicants must have a good standing grade point average.
4. Applicants must be in, or accepted, to any of the following:
a. High School, or
b. G.E.D. Program, or
c. Adult Education Program, or
d. College, Junior College, University, Vocational, or Technical School.
5. Applicants must submit two forms of picture IDs.
a. Original and copy of Current Student ID, and
b. Original and copy of State ID, or
c. Original and copy of Valid Driver’s License, or
d. Original and copy of Valid Learner’s Permit
6. Applicants must submit official grade records.
a. Original and copy of a current high school report card, or
b. Original and copy of a current college transcript, or
c. Original Verification of Enrollment for G.E.D./Adult Education Program
7. Applicants must submit proof of residency.
a. Original and copy of a utility bill (e.g., water, NIPSCO, cable) or rent receipt.
8. Applications and required documents must be completed in its entirety and submitted by the deadline.

Summer Youth Employment Information
Thank you for your interest in the City of East Chicago Summer Youth Employment. We are very excited to provide students with a unique opportunity to gain significant on the job training during the summer months.
The following information below is very important steps to know:
STEP 1 APPLICATION
Please make sure the application and the required documents are completed in its entirety and submitted by the deadline. The deadline is Wednesday, June 9, 2010.

STEP 2 SELECTION PROCESS
STEP 3 PHONE CALL
A phone call will be made by the Department of Human Resources advising you whether you are one of the applicants selected to work for the summer program. Please make sure the phone number on your application is a working number. At this time you will be advised to bring some documents with you to complete paperwork for payroll purposes.
STEP 4 ORIENTATION
There will be a mandatory orientation scheduled Monday, June 21, 2010 (tentative) for those who have been hired to work for the City.
STEP 5 SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT
The summer program operates for eight weeks. All summer employees are permitted to work only 20 hours / week. The hourly rate depends on the position you have been hired for.
Please be advised that completion of an application does not guarantee you a summer position. You must be determined eligible for the program.
