Duties
The City Clerk is an elected position whom the registered voting citizens elect.
Although our staff are cross-trained to be able to serve multiple areas, the staff at the East Chicago City Clerk's Office primarily work for one of three divisions: Criminal, Civil or the Common Council.
Criminal Division
The responsibilities of the City Clerk’s Office is to keep accurate records for the City Court including, but not limited to: collecting all fines and court costs, posting of cash bonds, and documentation of court appearances and court records. We are also responsible for processing the paperwork of court-ordered summons, bench warrants and restraining orders.
Civil Division
The Clerk's Office processes and keeps record of all civil cases, entered by attorneys only. The judgment for these cases must be less than $3000. Our office also monitors garnishment payments (all other civil cases are handled by Superior Court on Main St.).
Common Council Division
The Clerk’s Office is responsible for keeping city records, city ordinances, resolutions, as well as the Municipal Codebook and the City Seal. We are also responsible for notifying the media and the public of all council meetings and public hearings. The Office of the City Clerk also provides clerical support to the Common Council.
The Clerk and her staff attend all regular and special meetings of the council; and is required to keep an accurate journal and time of all such proceedings. All meeting minutes are maintained by our Tod Avenue office and are available for public inspection. Copies of public documents on file in the Office of the City Clerk are available to the public at a reasonable price. You would also contact this staff if you are in need of knowing who your Councilman and Precinct Committee persons are.
