Re: Ordinance No. 09-0020

Pursuant to City of East Chicago Ordinance No. 09-0020, An Ordinance Amending Chapter 123 of the East Chicago Municipal Code Regulating Rental Housing, any owner of real property which real property is used as rental housing is required to register all such properties on an annual basis, by January 31st of each year.  

There shall be a $10 annual fee assessed for each dwelling or rooming unit, due along with a registration form which is available at the East Chicago Building Department.  

Please be advised that there shall be a $100 late fee assessed for each dwelling or rental/rooming unit not registered by April 15th of each year thereafter. Additionally, failure to register any and all real property utilized as rental housing shall constitute a violation and shall be subject to a fine not to exceed $2,500 per rental unit.

Fence Ordinance

No fence shall be constructed or erected within the City of East Chicago unless the owner of the property upon which said fence is to be constructed or erected, or contractor performing such work for such owner, shall have first obtained a building permit from the Building Department of the City of East Chicago, according to the specifications stated in the ordinance. 

Weed Ordinance

Ordinance No. 0-0-0026 states that it is unlawful for any person to permit, suffer or allow any thistles, weeds, brush, undergrowth, or vegetation of any kind whatsoever to be, remain, or grow to a height above six inches (6”) from the ground on any lots, parcels, or tracts of land within the City.  The Building Department will be enforcing this ordinance throughout the summer months. 

Reporting Building Code Violations

Anyone can report building code violations by contacting the East Chicago Building Department and making a formal complaint.
